WHAT OGDEN VOTERS NEED TO KNOW
As midterms approach, voters in Ogden may see races ranging from county school boards to the Utah Legislature. However, the responsibilities of each elected position, and what voters actually elect, can vary.
U.S. House of Representatives
Utah voters will elect representatives to the U.S. House of Representatives. Members of the House serve two-year terms and introduce, debate and vote on federal legislation. Utah is divided into four congressional districts, two of which cover portions of Weber County.
In Congressional District 1, Democrat Ben McAdams, unaffiliated candidate Elias Henry Montgomery, Republican Riley Owen and Libertarian Jesse West are running for the seat.
Congressional District 2 includes Incumbent Republican Blake Moore, Democrat Peter Crosby, Libertarian Daniel Cottam, Independent American Party candidate Carlton Bowen and unaffiliated candidate Robert Moesinger.
House Districts
Similar to congressional representatives and senators, Utah has its own set of lawmakers and corresponding representatives.
Representatives throughout the state discuss and vote on state issues in the Utah State Legislature. Those elected serve two-year terms. These members can impact state laws and budgets.
Six districts cover Ogden City and the surrounding area.
House District 6 covers the northwestern side of Ogden, spanning north of 12th Street toward Brigham City and west of Stewart Drive. Republican Rob Bishop and Forward Party nominee James Rich are running for the position.
House District 7 reaches northeast, spanning from 2nd Street into North Ogden. Republican Ryan Wilcox currently holds the position. Democrat Bianca Mittendorf is challenging him for the seat.
House District 8, covers the eastern outskirts of Ogden, including areas north of Pleasant View and the Ogden Bench, as well as into eastern Weber County communities like Eden and Huntsville. Republican Jason Kyle currently holds the seat and will face two other nominees on the ballot: Democrat Kim James and Forward Party candidate Libby Shelton.
House District 9 represents downtown Ogden, including Historic 25th Street, and reaches west across West Haven. Incumbent Republican Jake Sawyer is seeking reelection against Democratic nominee Angela Choberka.
The seat for House District 10, currently held by Republican Jill Koford, will be up for grabs in November. The district covers South Ogden and branches east of Washington Terrace. Republican Jim Alvey and Democrat Rosemary Lesser are on the ballot this year. Lesser represented the district from 2022-24, and is seeking election again after her 2024 loss to Koford in the competitive district.
House District 11 covers the southern portion of Weber County, and extends into Davis County. Republican Katy Hall currently holds the seat and is seeking reelection against Democratic nominee Dave Calder.
Senate Districts
The Utah State Senate is the upper house in the state legislature. Senators discuss and vote on state legislation, with bills generally needing approval from both the House and Senate before they can be sent to the governor. Members are elected to four-year terms.
Senate District 5 covers downtown Ogden, South Ogden and Washington Terrace. Republican Jill Koford and Democrat “CJ” Christina Hernandez are seeking the seat.
Commissioners
The Weber County Commission is a three-member commission that oversees county government and is responsible for developing county-wide policies, acting in both legislative and administrative roles. Members are elected at large.
Republican Duane D. Kearsley, Forward Party candidate Gary New and Democrat Alvin Thurgood eye seat A, while Republican Jon Beesley is the lone nominee for seat B.
School Boards
Voters will also elect representatives to state and local school boards.
The Utah State Board of Education oversees Utah’s public education system and establishes statewide policies and standards. Board members represent geographic districts across the state.
In State School Board District 2, Republican Joseph Kerry and Democrat Kacee Weaver are running for the seat.
Along with the state, two school districts in the Ogden area—Ogden School District and Weber County School District—will also host elections.
Election Day is Nov. 3. Voters can find their polling location, registration information and a sample ballot through the Weber County Elections website.
