From 12 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 11, Ogden’s Lester Park will serve as a venue and inspiration for a day of poetry and community. Poetry at the Park is a free, all-ages event for visitors to engage with poetry through writing and art activities, open mics, and reading time.
Throughout the duration of Poetry at the Park, attendees can participate in a variety of poetry-themed and literary-based activities, including a community book exchange, workshops and activity stations, a low-sensory reading area, and more.
One of the organizers of Poetry at the Park, Jazmyne Olson, shares how she took inspiration for the event from the accessible nature of poetry to promote creative thought and expression. Olson says, “We hope this event will encourage people to engage more with the local literary community, especially during Banned Book Week and during a time of reduced care towards the humanities.”
The schedule, activity stations, and volunteers have been organized by Olson and her co-organizer, Krystiana Davis, and the event is sponsored by Ogden CAN and the Weber State Design Lab. While Poetry at the Park is the first event of its kind organized by Olson and Davis, Olson says that they “hope this event can act as an experiment for what type of activities might flourish in the park, or the Ogden community as a whole, in the future.”
Lester Park is situated near the Weber County Library (Main Branch), which will serve as a secondary venue if the weather does not permit activities outdoors. Parking is also available at the library for the event, rain or shine.
