“Nate’s Song,” is the first-ever release by Ogden singer/songwriter Christian Scheller. The track, off his debut EP “Melanchozy,” is a beautiful love song that he wrote for his husband as an anniversary gift. He surprised Nate with a performance of “Nate’s Song” during Ogden Music Festival last year.

Now the non-traditional traditional love song is out there for the world to hear.

Scheller says he wanted to write a traditional folk/country love song because gay musicians and their stories are uncommon in the genre. The writing came easily, he says. “It’s a true story.”

A record has been a long time coming for Scheller, who has been playing live music for over twelve years. His first official gig was at Alpine Pizza at age 14—an early start that he attributes to singer/songwriter Che Zuro.

The two met when he worked at the old Harley and Bucks restaurant in Ogden Valley with Zuro’s late husband Chris Whiting. When Zuro learned that he’d started taking guitar lessons from Gar Ashby, another local musician, she asked him to play two songs. From then on, she’d always have him play during her breaks. Later, she encouraged him to play at the Farmer’s Markets with one condition: he had to learn a new song every week. Soon he had 100 songs for his sets.

Now, at age 26 he’s played shows all over the country from California to Washington, Indiana, Kentucky Texas…and three showcases at South by Southwest. “It was all because of Che,” he says. He also talks about opportunities to play with other local music greats over the years like Korene Greenwood and Scotty Haze.

Imposture syndrome, insecurities, and thoughts of am I really good at this? delayed his recording ambitions—but just like his first gig, it was musician friends that influenced him to go for it.

He met Scott Rogers and Shane Osguthorpe (The Proper Way Band) who had him on their docuseries “Ogden City Limits,” and played a gig with Osguthorpe and Eric Bauman at Compass Rose Lodge in Hunstville, Utah—experiences that led him to the realization that it was time to record.

“I feel like I wouldn’t be where I am without the love and support, and amazingness, of the Ogden music community,” Scheller says.

“Nate’s Song,” was recorded at Proper Way Studios in Ogden and features local musicians: Zaza VanDyke (bass), Shane Osguthorpe (keys), and Scott Rogers (guitar).
