Q & A: Barry ‘The Beer Guy’

Q & A

Barry Carr is a local legend to Ogden Raptors fans; he has poured beer for them over the past decade. He’s a proud U.S. Army veteran and assistant manager at Holiday Oil who is madly in love with his wife, Sharajoy. They have been married for 21 years (they have known each other for 40) and have five children and 14 grandchildren. During Christmas, the two are known as Santa and Joy (Mrs.) Claus. His dad, Larry Carr, lives in a unique house in Ogden — it is the Old Fire Station No. 2 on 25th Street and Fillmore Avenue. Barry says, “Go to YouTube and look up Ogden fire house.” Fox 13 Utah did a great story about him and his house.

What initially brought you to the Raptors?

I answered an ad on Facebook for Hawkers. I thought I'd be selling peanuts and Cracker Jack. They said "We want you to sell beer." I said, "I don't wanna sell beer. It's heavy and I'm an out-of-shape fat guy." They said, "You'll make good money selling beer.” So, I started selling beer.

Who gave you The Beer Guy name?

It kind of just evolved. The fans would yell, "Hey, Beer Guy!" I slowly became Barry the Beer Guy.

What's the craziest tip you've ever received?

When I was walking up and down the stands, some gentlemen called me over. They ordered some beer and started asking me questions about how things were going for me. I told them and they gave me $100. It was very humbling.

What's the most memorable night you've had at the Raptors ballpark?

There have been so many. Most recently, I was honored as the Ogden Raptors Veteran and was given a really nice challenge coin. That was really cool!

How did you build such a fan base?

I think there's only one way to do that. Be kind and have fun. I'll talk to anyone. It's really a good time.

Do you know how many games you've worked at?

I've worked 10 seasons. I've only missed a few. So, I'd say a whole lot.

Who is the most surprising person to ever visit your stand?

I've met so many people. Some of my favorites have been Brian Mullahy from Channel 2, he's a really nice guy. I've had the pleasure of meeting a few of local mayors Mike Caldwell and Ben Nadolski of Ogden, and Willard Cragun of Roy. I've also met many of our very own Ogden Raptors players and coaching staff. What great guys!
