OGDEN — Supporters filled the lobby of the Marshall White Center on Tuesday as Angel Castillo announced her candidacy for mayor of Ogden City.

In a brief campaign launch speech, Castillo discussed key tactics to drive her long-term vision for “lifting up all of the community” that she plans to employ if elected, including: a pathway to home ownership, right sizing the budget, cutting taxes within a year “because there’s that much waste,” fiscal responsibility, and equitable access to capital and opportunity, with a focus on social inclusivity.

“I want to make sure that no matter where you live, what your zip code is, what color your skin is, or what’s in your wallet, that you have equitable access…so we all have the freedom to thrive, to breathe clean air, to make a good living and pursue our dreams,” Castillo said, emphasizing that over 32,000 residents in Ogden are Hispanic/Latino and do not always have access.

Housing is a big deal for Castillo, who was raised in Chicago by a single mom. She recalled a time in her childhood when her mom, who worked nights at a factory, was regretfully unable to spare a quarter that Castillo had asked for—“I understand what it is to worry about making rent,” she said.

“Home ownership is the fastest way to financial freedom and the way out of generational poverty,” she said, also emphasizing its impact on the local economy—”If you are burdened by rent you are not going to local coffee shops.”

Castillo calls for more local business support, suggesting “doubling down on local” as opposed to investing millions for out of state developers bringing business here.

“We have an amazing, thriving artist community that needs additional support, wonderful craft beers and cheese, local businesses that make tamales…” she said following the campaign speech. “I really want to make sure that the entrepreneurial spirit, the grit the people of Ogden have, has access to capital to make their dreams come true.”

Angel Castillo will be the first female and first Latina Mayor of Ogden City if elected. This is her second bid for the office, defeated by incumbent Mayor Mike Caldwell by 8% of the vote in 2019. Caldwell has not yet announced plans to run for reelection.
